Grapevine Bacterial Testing
Pierce’s disease is caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. It is spread by leafhoppers known as sharpshooters feeding on certain types of xylem . The disease is known to be present from California, Florida and to Central America. Its presence has been known since the 1880’s where in Southern California it destroyed 35,000 acres of vineyards. At that time the disease was known as Anaheim Disease, Mysterious Disease and the California Vine Disease. It was eventually named for N. B. Pierce, who extensively studied the disease. (James C. Medley, Texas A&M University).
Agri-Analysis has been testing for Pierce's disease since 1981, using a highly sensitive and specific ELISA method.
